Books & CD's
The School produces a variety of books and CDs for educational purposes. These may be purchased by the public through the UNSW Bookshop.
The Trilogy in Four Parts on Solar Cells
Red Book: Solar Cells: Operating Principles, Technology and System Applications, M. Green
"An excellent text... newcomers to the field will find that this book will allow them to understand the more specialists books and many of the published papers whilst those already in the field will find useful information ..." Professor R. Hill, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Explains the operating principles and design of solar cells, the technology used to produce them, improved future technology, and provides a good introduction to the design of systems based on these cells.

Blue Book: Applied Photovoltaics (Second Edition),
S.R. Wenham, M.A. Green, M.E. Watt, R. Corkish
“This book will make an excellent reference for engineers and scientists involved in photovoltaics. The breadth of knowledge contained within and the detailed equations to support it, as well as being an easy reading style will enable people to get to the understanding of why PV systems are put together the way they are – well beyond rules of thumb.” Mike Dymond (Sowilo Engineering Pty Ltd), Solar Progress, June 2006.
Provides a good familiarization with practical properties of solar cells and modules, but concentrates on photovoltaic applications ranging from small stand-alone systems to large grid-connected installations and includes solar powered water pumping.
This book was originally published in 1995, and is used as part of
the School's undergraduate course on Applied
Photovoltaics and postgraduate course on Photovoltics.
It has been extensively revised and updated (January 2006) by staff
at the School,
based on experiences teaching this course over the last several of
years and changes in this rapidly developing field and, now, published
globally by Earthscan (London) in December 2006.

Other Books
Speed of Light: The 1996 World Solar Challenge, D.M. Roche, A.E.T. Schinckel, J.W.V. Storey, C.P. Humphris and M.R. Guelden
".. excellent in every way. It represents a perfect example of presenting technical information in a clear manner that, while exploring the wide variety of approaches by previous designers, helps the reader comprehend the underlying physical principles--and does all this over the many disciplines involved in solar cars. Its mixture of text, pictures, and diagrams makes it accessible. It will help advance both education and technology ... I hope is is a wild best seller, because its value is far beyond just solar car races." Paul B. MacCready, Chairman of the Board, AeroVironment Inc, and the American Academy of Achievements Engineer of the Century.
"Provides a broad background of engineering and scientific information directly applicable to solar car design, construction and racing." Howard G. Wilson, former vice-President of Hughes Aircraft, and Director of General Motors' Sunraycer and EV1 projects.
In addition to being a definitive technical report on the 1996 World Solar Challenge, Speed of Light contains a detailed description of the race itself together with numerous colour and B&W photographs, diagrams, graphs etc. There are also chapters on the 1996 World Solar Cycle Challenge and the developments arising from solar car racing.

Solar Cells: Resources for the Secondary Science Teacher, S. Wenham and R. Largent
A valuable resource for secondary teachers who wish to introduce a unit on photovoltaic technology into their curriculum. It provides information about solar cell technology, their benefit as a teaching tool to demonstrate broader scientific concepts, as well as a list of potential experiments for students to complete.

CDROMs
Speed of Light 2 - The 1999 World Solar Challenge CD-ROM, J. Cotter, D. Roche, J. Storey, A. Schinckel and C. Humphris
"This beautiful and easy-to-navigate CDROM is packed to the rim with race coverage and analysis, digital images, weather data and technical vehicle data from the 1999 World Solar Challenge race from Darwin to Adelaide, Australia. It captures the spirit of adventure and euphoria of making it 3000 km across one of the world's harshest continents, powered only by sunlight, ingenuity and sheer perseverance. The new CDROM also carries on the tradition of the Speed of Light series as the definitive technical introduction for teams considering building a solar powered racing car - clearly and comprehensively describing the many technical components and the important trade-offs in designing, building and racing a solar-powered car." Stuart Bowden and Christiana Honsberg, authors of Photovoltaics: Devices, System and Applications CDROM
Adapted from the well-known Speed of Light - The 1996 World Solar Challenge, this CDRom describes the 1999 World Solar Challenge Race across the continent of Australia in October of 1999. It contains an account of the race, an analysis of vehicle performance, several chapters on solar racing car technology, a compendium of vehicle technical data, weather data and race-related web sites, as well as a library of digitised photographs taken during the race—in total, 650 MB of information integrated into an easily navigable browser-compatible format.

Photovoltaics: Devices, Systems and Applications CD-ROM by C. Honsberg and S. Bowden
A key barrier to the introduction of photovoltaics is the lack of general technical information. The Photovoltaics: Devices, Systems and Applications CDROM (PVCDROM) is a new publication that provides information on a wide range of photovoltaic issues from device physics to practical implementations of photovoltaic systems. The topics covered include; properties of sunlight, sSemiconductors and pn junctions, solar cell operation, cell properties and design, manufacturing silicon solar cells, and cell interconnection & module fabrication.
