Future Students - Undergraduate

Flexible First Year Program

In 2006, the Faculty introduced a flexible first year program which allows students to defer their choice of specialisation until the end of their first year of study.

The new first year has a common core to ensure a broad base in mathematics and science and engineering fundamentals. There is a course in design to introduce students to the practice of engineering and the skills of problem solving. Students then have a wide choice of electives, which they can use to further particular interests or to prepare themselves for their chosen specialisation. Students undecided about their specialisation need not make a decision until the end of first year although a late decision may reduce the number of electives available later in the program.

Students enrolled in all BE programs (except Software Engineering and Bioinformatics) in the Faculty of Engineering will complete five common first year engineering courses plus three elective courses. Students will be able to enter directly into their preferred discipline program or into a general flexible first year program. Students enrolled in the flexible program will need to transfer to a discipline at the end of first year. The five common courses are:

The list of available first year electives for students to choose the 3 elective courses from are shown on the website of the Faculty of Engineering. For students who enter directly into their chosen area of specialisation, each School has a required elective and two recommended electives that students undertaking their program(s) should take. We require students enrolling in the first year of one of our undergraduate programs (3642, 3655, 3656, 3657, 3658) take:
