Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Science

The School offers both the Photovoltaics and Solar Energy Engineering program and the Renewable Energy Engineering program combined with a Bachelor of Science. This combined degree enables students to extend their knowledge of scientific concepts which form the basis for engineering principles and applications. The combined degree requires 5 years of full time study and program requirements can be found in the UNSW online handbook (PV/Science, RE/Science). Students should consult with staff from the Faculty of Science regarding available majors, and the courses which must be taken to satisfy major requirements. This should be done at the end of a student's first year, as students generally do not commence enrolling in courses which count towards their Science program until the second year of their studies.

A popular combination for some of our students is to combine their photovoltaic studies with a science degree in physics. Physics is important for understanding how a solar cell works and these students will be well placed for future research careers improving photovoltaic devices. However, there are many more science areas students can major in and with the cross-disciplinary nature of many renewable energy applications, their skill in science will be valued highly.

Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Arts

Both SPREE's engineering programs can be combined with a Bachelor of Arts. They share the same program code 3656 on the handbook. Students are able to choose their specialisation in either Photovoltaics and Solar Energy or Renewable Energy Engineering. This is a five-year, full-time program where, in addition to satisfying the requirements for the single engineering degree, students are required to complete a further 60 units of credit of an approved major from within the Faculty of Arts and Social Science. Students should consult with staff from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science regarding available majors, and the courses which must be taken to satisfy major requirements. This should be done at the end of a student's first year, as student generally do not commence enrolling in courses which count towards their Arts program until the second year of their studies.

By combining their engineering studies with a Bachelor of Arts students can enhance their communication, research and analytical skills. These are important as engineers don't just design solutions to problems, they communicate these solutions to a broader community of both engineers and non-engineers. Engineers operate in a wide range of roles and liaise with members of industry, the government and community, manage staff, and instigate change. One possible combination for students wishing to work on renewable energy applications in developing countries is to learn a language which will enable them to communicate with local villagers and colleagues.

Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Commerce

The combined Engineering / Commerce undergraduate program is a relatively new program which will allow students to satisfy the requirements for a Bachelor of Engineering and a Bachelor of Commerce in 5.5 years. One of the main reasons this program has been introduced is to enhance the technical and scientific expertise of Engineering graduates with an understanding of commercial and financial principles which will assist engineers to manage projects, obtain finance for the commercialisation of new products, manage and create companies, manage the manufacture and marketing of products, accurately predict and monitor market and economic trends, etc.

A full program outline for this combination can be found in the UNSW Online Handbook. Both of the School's undergraduate programs can be combined with a Bachelor of Commerce.

Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Laws

This is a six year full-time combined degree program leading to the award of the two degrees of Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Laws (BE/LLB). The program is intended for potential engineers who wish to become more aware of legal and social aspects of the engineering profession, and skilled in technical management, or potential legal practitioners who wish to add a strong technical dimension to their education and training.

A full program outline for this combination can be found in the UNSW Online Handbook. Both of the School's undergraduate programs can be combined with a Bachelor of Laws.
