Biodiesel

Biodiesel project at UNSW. Sponsored by the UNSW Union.

Biodiesel project at UNSW. Sponsored by the UNSW Union.

This project was initiated by the UNSW Union to develop the capability at UNSW to convert waste vegetable oil from the Union’s food outlets to Biodiesel. Biodiesel is an environmentally friendly fuel which can be burned in any standard diesel engine. The system used to convert the oil to fuel will be housed in a mobile trailer which will also be a valuable educational tool. The process heat for the reaction will be provided by a solar hot water system, and the electrical power for the monitors and pumps will be provided by a photovoltaic system.

It is hoped that once the trailer has been built and tested, that it will be used to visit high schools to demonstrate renewable energy and sustainable energy engineering principles.
