Enrolment 2008
General Information
Re-enrolment for currently enrolled students will commence on the 10th December 2007. Students should note that as of 2007, the university has moved to sessional centralised scheduling of courses. Therefore students will only be able to enrol in session 1 2008, and will be required to enrol for session 2 at a later date. The centralisation of timetabling was done to enable the university to better use teaching space, and to minimise timetable clashes and maximise choice for students.
Late 2006 there were a number of changes to the School’s undergraduate educational programs due to changes in course offerings of other Engineering Schools brought about by the new flexible first year program. These changes will affect students enrolling in the 4th year of their degree and these students will need to check their program requirements as outlined in these pages carefully. Where students are unsure of their program requirements, or are experiencing issues they should see staff in the School Office for advice.
Students should be familiar with the enrolment deadlines as advertised in the Key Dates section of the myUNSW website. Students will have access to the online enrolment facility over the Christmas / New Year university break, however, you will not be able to obtain any assistance from UNSW / SPREE staff as we will be on holidays until the 2nd January.
Students are responsible for their own enrolment and need to ensure that they are meeting the requirements of their program so they are eligible to graduate. You must ensure that you have met all the relevant pre-requisites / assumed knowledge for the courses you are enrolling in. Program outlines are available in these webpages, and rules relating to your enrolment and general education can be found on myUNSW. Frequently Asked Questions
1. What do I do if I have a timetable
clash?
If you have a timetable clash, you should first attempt to resolve the
clash by enrolling in alternative lectures / tutorials / labs for one
or both of the courses. If the clash cannot be resolved in this way,
then you may be able to enrol in a different course and take the clashing
course in winter / summer session, or a later session of your program.
However, please keep in mind how this will affect your enrolment in
later years, particularly with regard to meeting prerequisite requirements.
Finally, if the clash cannot be resolved and you have no other option
but to take the courses in the current session, then you can use the
Timetable Clash Form to apply to undertake the courses with the clash.
This form must be approved by the academic-in-charge of the course that
you will be missing, and the student also signs to accept the risk of
failure associated with the clash. Students will only be allowed one
hour of timetable clashes per week per session if they have a WAM over
55.
2. How many units of credit am I allowed
to take in a session?
Local students (i.e. Australian citizens and permanent residents) can
enrol in between 3 and 27 units of credit each session. However, if
you are enrolled as a part-time student, then you will not be eligible
for certain concessions that full-time students are entitled to receive,
i.e. transport concessions. International students must be enrolled
full-time to satisfy the requirements of their visas. Only in very exceptional
circumstances will students be permitted to enrol in more than 27 units
of credit in a session. If you need to overload, please send an email
to pv.course@unsw.edu.au indicating which course you want to be enrolled
in and your reasons for taking more than 27 units of credit. Students
who are allowed to enrol in more than 27 units of credit do so at their
own risk of failure.
3. Can I do a language for General Education?
Yes, students can substitute 6UoC of a language course for 6UoC of general
education, provided that they have not completed any other general education
courses from within the Faculty of Arts and Social Science. Please collect
a Course Substitution Form from the School Office, complete, and return
to the School Office.

4. What do I do if I want to take leave?
Students may take leave for up to one year during their undergraduate
studies. Program Leave forms are available from UNSW
Student Central. You must apply for leave, otherwise you may be
withdrawn from the program if you do not re-enrol.
